Painting with Spices

We're continuing our exploration into unique painting mediums...this week we painted with spices!

I mixed some glue and water in a little cup (I save the individual applesauce cups for painting).  Then TJ(4) shook a different spice into each cup.  We used cumin, cinnamon, and mustard.

Let them start painting!

This is a great way to introduce kids to different smells and names of spices.  Talk about different foods that might use the spices...let them choose their favorite and least favorite smell/spice.

This might not be the most beautiful finished product :) but I loved it for the sensory aspect.  And the kids thought it was funny they got to paint with something you cook with!

  5. This is a great idea, but let me give a few words of caution before people start doing this in their classrooms. Many food allergic children will react to spices in this amount of concentration. Please be careful when doing this in a classroom setting to make sure no child is allergic to any of those spices. For my son, cinnamon, paprika would send him into anaphylaxis if he painted with it. =(

Maybe to keep the sensory idea, you could scent paint with various floral/fruity essences, like orange or lavender. (?)

    1. A good reminder Dorothy. As with all new activities, toys, etc. it's important to carefully watch your kids to see if there are potential allergies or choking hazards.

I like your idea of using essences. We may try that next!
